Finding a Medical Specialist

.Allergy and Immunology (Asthma)

Allergists  are physicians with special expertise in the medical management of asthma and allergies. These doctors provide evaluation and management of hay fever, asthma, chronic cough, hives, food allergies, chronic rhinitis and sinusitis, and immunological disorders.


Anesthesiology

Anesthesiologists are physicians who administer general anesthesia that "put people to sleep", and monitor their status during major surgery. They also provide local anesthesia and sedation to block pain during minor surgery. These doctors have special training and expertise in the management of pain.


Cardiology (Heart)

Cardiologists are physicians with special expertise in the medical management of heart disease. Patients with heart problems, including coronary artery disease, heart failure, abnormal heart rhythms, abnormal heart valves, or patients who need evaluation of their risks for heart disease are usually evaluated by a cardiologist.


Dermatology (Skin)

Dermatologists  are physicians with special expertise in the management of diseases of skin, hair, and nails. They evaluate and manage skin tumors, and provide cosmetic services, which can include laser skin treatments.


Emergency Medicine

Many Hospitals staff their Emergency Rooms with physicians trained in Emergency Medicine. They manage minor and major trauma, and medical emergencies such as stroke and heart attack. They manage the patients who come to the emergency room.


Endocrinology (Diabetes)

Endocrinologists are physicians with special expertise in the management of diabetes and disorders of the hormones that can affect growth, thyroid function, sexual function and osteoporosis.


Family Practice

Family Practice Doctors are primary care physicians who provide medical care for the whole family. They provide obstetrical care, deliver babies, take care of newborns and provide medical care for children, teens, adults and elderly adults. Some family practice doctors also perform medical and surgical procedures.


Gastroenterology (Digestive and Liver)

Gastroenterologists  are physicians with special expertise in the management of diseases of the stomach, intestines, colon and liver.


General Surgeons

General Surgeons manage the surgical problems of the abdomen, including cancer, bowel obstruction, appendicitis, gallstones, and trauma to the abdomen. Some General Surgeons also have special training in Thoracic Surgery, Vascular Surgery, and the management of trauma.

Geriatricians are primary care physicians who specialize in the management of the elderly. The elderly have a number of medical problems that are a natural consequence of the aging process, and they can often benefit from the experience of a Geriatrician. The goal is to maintain independence and a high quality of life for the older patients.


Heart Surgeons

Heart Surgeons evaluate heart disease that may require surgical intervention. They perform coronary artery by passe grafting, valve replacements, and other surgical procedures on the heart.


Internal Medicine

Internists are primary care doctors who manage acute and chronic medical problems for adults. They stress health education and prevention, maintain your medical records, and oversee all of your health care.


Nephrology (kidneys)

Nephrologists  are physicians with special expertise in the management of kidney disease and oversee the management of patients on dialysis or patients requiring a kidney transplant.


Neurology (Brain)

Neurologists  are physicians with special expertise in the medical management of brain disorders. Patients with problems including stroke, dizzy or blackout spells, seizures and migraine headaches are often evaluated by a neurologist


Neurosurgery (Brain and Spine Surgery)

Neurosurgeons manage brain and spine disease that may require surgical intervention. They evaluate and manage injuries to the brain and spine including trauma, bleeds or blood clots, and tumors or vascular lesions. They also manage disk herniations in the neck and low back causing "pinched nerves" and other nerve injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome.


Obstetrics and Gynecology

These physicians provide a wide range of medical and surgical services for women, and sometimes provide primary medical care. Obstetricians provide medical management of pregnancy and deliver babies. Gynecologists evaluate and treat disorders of the female reproductive system.


Oncology (Cancer) and Hematology (Blood)

Oncologists  are physicians with special expertise in the evaluation and treatment of cancer. They oversee the medical work-up, provide advice on the management options and administer chemotherapy protocols. Hematologists manage disease of the blood including bleeding disorders, anemia, and cancer.


Ophthalmology (Eye)

Ophthalmologists provide medical and surgical management of problems with the eye.

These problems include cataracts, glaucoma, traumatic injuries, inflammations and infections.


Orthopedics (Bone Surgery)

Orthopedic Surgeons manage injuries of the bones and joints. Some orthopedic surgeons have additional special training in surgery of the hand/foot, spine, and pelvis.


Otolaryngology (ENT,ears nose throat)

Otolaryngologists are surgeons who manage diseases of the ears, nose and throat. They evaluate problems associated with hearing loss, sinus problems, and cancer of the head and neck. Some otolaryngologists also perform cosmetic facial surgery and perform laser skin treatments.


Pathology (labs/autopsies)

Pathologists run medical labs to perform a wide range of tests on body fluids and tissue samples. They also evaluate tissue samples to identify tumors and perform autopsies to determine the cause of death

Pediatricians are primary care doctors for children. They follow the child from birth until maturity, tracking normal development, providing immunizations, and managing the common ailments of childhood. They keep the medical records, provide the checkups required for school, participation in sports and camp.


Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Physiatrists oversee the management of patients with temporary or permanent disabilities to try to help these patients manage activities of daily life necessary to maintain independence and a good quality of life. They work with patients who have had strokes or other brain injuries with loss of cognitive function, strength, or coordination. They also work with patients who have had spinal injuries and have lost motor function. Some physiatrists have been involved in the management of patients disabled by chronic pain.


Plastic Surgery

Plastic Surgeons are involved in reconstructive surgery to repair birth defects such as cleft lip/palate, traumatic injuries, and to repair problems from poor wound healing. They also perform a wide range of cosmetic surgery from facial procedures, to breast surgery, and liposuction. Some plastic surgeons provide laser skin treatments.


Psychiatry (Mental Disorders)

Psychiatrists are doctors who specialize in the medical management of patients with mental disorders. Psychiatrists manage patients with severe depressions, manic-depressive mood swings, paranoia, delusions, and hallucinations.


Pulmonary Disease (lungs)

Pulmonologists  are physicians with special expertise who manage disease of the lungs including emphysema, cancer, and pneumonia. Some pulmonologists have special training in critical care medicine and oversee the management of patients in the critical care unit.


Radiology

Radiologists manage diagnostic imaging facilities. They take conventional x-rays images, perform special studies, including arteriograms, myelograms, ultrasounds, nuclear medicine studies, CT scanning, and MRI. Radiologists provide the diagnostic Images that help doctors see the cause of medical problems within the body and they have expertise in the interpretation of these images.


Urology

Urologists are surgeons with expertise in the management of problems in men and women with the urinary tract. They manage surgical problems of the kidneys, bladder, and genitalia. Urologists also manage a wide range of problems including obstruction of urine, incontinence, impotence, cancer, kidney stones, and perform routine procedures such as vasectomies.

General Dentists provides adult dental care. They perform checkups, routine cleaning, and filling of cavities, tooth extractions, and other dental procedures.


Pediatric Dentist

Pediatric Dentists provide dental care for children. They perform checkups, routine cleaning, and filling of cavities, tooth extractions, and other dental procedures.


Family Dentist

Family Dentist provides dental care for children and adults. They perform checkups, routine cleaning, and filling of cavities, tooth extractions, and other dental procedures


Oral Surgeon

Oral Surgeons, are dentists with special training in surgery of the mouth. They perform surgical procedures to repair traumatic injuries, reconstruction of facial defects, reparation for dentures, placement of implants, and treatment of TMJ.


Orthodontics

Orthodontists are dentists with special expertise in the correction of malocclusion, "crooked teeth", the placement of braces to straighten teeth.


Periodontics

Periodontists are dentist with expertise in the management of gum disease and use of implants


Endodontics

Endodontists are dentists with expertise in the management of diseases involving the tooth root, and tooth pulp,


Optometrist (O.D)

Optometrists are doctors of optometry. They evaluate and manage eye disease and problems with vision that can be corrected with glasses or contact lenses


Podiatrists (D.P.M.)

Podiatrists provide medical and surgical management of disorders of the feet.


Psychologists

Clinical Psychologists provide counseling, psychological testing, help with relationships, stress, anxiety, and behavioral disorders.


Psychotherapists

These professionals have training in various fields of mental health and provide counseling services.


Nurse Practitioners

The nurse practitioner has special clinical training in primary care or one of the medical specialties, and can evaluate and manage a wide range of medical problems under the supervision of a physician. A number of patients use the nurse practitioner as their primary care provider.


Physical Therapist:

Physical Therapist work under the direction of a Physician, to provide an exercise program to build strength and function, restore walking, and to help prepare patients for return to work or resumption of full activities after an injury, stroke or surgery.


Alternative Medical Services

Acupuncture

Acupuncturists use the Chinese technique of placing fine needles as a treatment for pain.


Chiropractor (D.C.)

Chiropractors use techniques similar to massage, manual manipulation of the musculature and soft tissue, and spine to help relieve back pain, neck pain, and joint pain.


Massage Therapy

Massage Therapists provide therapeutic massage to help relieve stress, to treat sports injuries, and to relieve the pain associated with muscle strain and spasm.


Naturopath (N.D.)

Naturopaths use diet and natural products to maintain good health and treat illness.
